REINVENT YOURSELF... page 3

OVERCOME PITFALLS
Naturally, you'll encounter obstacles on the way to self-reinvention--
but the hurdles are nothing that you cannot overcome.
Lack imagination? To change a habitual way of life, you need a mental picture of yourself
without the habit. Often, another person -- a coach, mentor or a counselor
-- can help you to imagine the "new you". Then you can take the
appropriate practical steps to get there.
Unsupportive friends and family? Anyone whose needs are already being met by the way you are right
now and who has something to lose from your reinvention is likely to stand
in your way. This may include people who are very close to you.
You may want to modify your goals in order to leave a space for those
people who are important to you. But sometimes you have to make a choice
between leaving another person behind as you grow... and letting your dreams
stay just dreams.
Unwillingness to sacrifice? All
change involves loss. You can't hit the road without leaving home. Accept
the necessity of sacrifice to realize your vision. Confront the question
honestly. Is the price too great? Proceed accordingly.
Inability to tolerate anxiety? Change
is a frightening prospect, and some people are more fearful than others.
Maybe you can't make the fear go away, but you can courageously develop
the skills to strive for your goal anyway.
Depression? Chronic, low-key depression robs anyone of the self-confidence,
hope and energy needed to seek fulfillment. It is a vicious cycle ... and
staying put deepens the down feelings. Modern antidepressants and psychotherapy
can raise you from the rut and enable you to lose your inborn power to
change and grow.
