To build a bridge to the next phase of your life, you have
to know where you want to go and what materials are at hand. What are the
potentials from which you can construct a new you?
What do you have too much of? What aspects of yourself are overused
or underused? Writing out such an inventory will lead you to understand
what you need... and to define the issues and satisfactions that are important
enough to become your goals.
Find out what's required to realize these goals. If you've resolved
to reinvent your career and you've determined your true interests, meet
people who are doing what you dream of doing someday.
WELCOME FEEDBACK
When a desire for greater challenge and excitement draws you to reinvent
yourself, give yourself the time to make the shift.
Take a hint from artists in all creative fields, and be prepared
to rewrite and revise-- and rewrite and revise-- your goals and the personality
changes that will help you reach those goals.
There's no rush. Any story becomes much, much better if it's allowed
to go through a series of drafts. In writing, you start out stupid and
end up brilliant. Each time you revise what you've written, you see what
you did wrong, correct your errors and deepen your understanding to make
the next version better.
The same goes for developing your untried skills, ways of dealing
with people and underused parts of your personality. Try experimenting
in front of an audience with new ways of being you. As a beginner, welcome
feedback and don't take it personally. Think of yourself as a work in
progress.
